New Schedule For Metro High Schools

Block scheduling is on the horizon for all Nashville schools. School officials announced that by next fall, all Metro Nashville schools will move from their current schedule to a more flexible block schedule. Currently there are some on block scheduling and some on traditional six class schedules.
Block scheduling became common for many high schools in the 1990’s and has shown to be an effective scheduling practice, allowing for 4 electives rather than 2 in some cases. The Nashville system will use an A/B block schedule which allows for 90 minute classes, four classes a day, on alternating days.
Associate Superintendent of High Schools Jay Steele has said that the switch is partially because of inconsistent pacing between schools making it especially hard for transfer students in an area with a high mobility rate. Another reason is to maximize the teachers’ time and efforts, offering them more time for planning periods.
