Tennessee is known as the volunteer state....so if you’re in the Tennessee spirit and want to give back to your community, what are your options?

Whether it’s time, talent, or treasure that you have to offer, Nashville has a lot of great charities that need your help!  Every week ISurfNashville will feature some of our favorite charities in the Middle Tennessee area.

Outreach

Nashville Area Red Cross Helps Flood Victims

The Nashville Area Red Cross has been instrumental in organizing relief efforts for victims of the flood.  The waters may have receded, but there is still much work to be done.  More than 2000 people were displaced from their homes, and many businesses and homes have extensive damage.

You can donate in several different ways.  You can donate online at www.middletennredcross.org,

or you can text “REDCROSS” to 90999 on your phone to make a $10 donation added to your monthly bill or debited from a prepaid account balance.

You can also go the old school way and just mail a check to:

Nashville Area Red Cross

2201 Charlotte Avenue

Nashville, TN 37203

In addition to financial assistance, the Red Cross always needs volunteers for a variety of positions.  Check out their website to see how you can help.  In times like these it is important for members of a community to stand together and help each other out.

YES Helps Inner City Kids

Youth Encouragement Services, or YES, has been helping children in Nashville for nearly fifty years.  They specialize in helping at risk children in inner city areas maximize their full potential through offering after school programs from tutoring to fall and winter basketball.

Academics: YES offers back to school services, providing pencils, paper, etc. to children whose families struggle to provide them with the necessary school supplies.  They offer homework help and after school tutoring, and they don’t forget to reward the kids for exceptional effort.  Academic achievement is rewarded at the end of the year with a special field trip for honor roll kids.

College Scholarships- It is extremely rare to find viable scholarship opportunities for inner city kids, but YES has done just that, thanks to the generosity of their donors.

Tiger Haven Provides Refuge For Great Cats

All over America there are big cats living in captivity.  Some live in zoos, some are owned by private collectors and some are raised by breeders.  Although it may seem exciting to have a big cat as a pet, many people buy them without realizing how expensive and time-consuming,   not to mention dangerous, they really are.
